The Appleseed ...

"Oh, the Lords been good to me.  And so I thank the Lord for giving me the things I need.  The sun, and the rain, and the APPLE SEED!  The Lord's been good to me!  Thank you, Jesus.  Amen!"

We have sung this song lots of times when I was growing up and now we sing it in our home.  Today, Matthew's school class went on a field trip to the Library and each child was asked to bring along 2 apples.  I got to go along on this exciting field trip!!!

Matthew had no problem going to bed last night because ... he had a field trip tomorrow!  He was no problem getting up this morning either because ... he had a field trip today!!!

We got to the library and "Johnny Appleseed" was there!  He told all the children the story of how Johnny walked many, many miles across Pennsylvania and into Ohio and Indiana.  On Johnny's journey he was planting apple seeds!  As the man told the story, he had stuffed animals that Johnny (well now, Johnny's animals would have been alive and wild) would have seen on his journey and this seemed exciting to the kids to touch and feel.

After the story of Johnny was over, we all went outside and each child put his/her apple into an apple press and they made fresh apple cider!!!  They got to try some and it was delicious.  I have never seen that before and even I was intrigued.

Then the kids got to pick out four books from the library and check them out using their very own library card!!!

Here are some details that I got to see with Matthew's class ...

Matthew is putting his 2 apples into the apple cider press.
This was our "Johnny Apple Seed".When he would turn the wheel, it would crush the apples and put the peelings into a barrel underneath the press.  Then the juice would flow out of the barrel and into a small bucket.
If you look close, you can see a bee wanting to taste some cider too!!!
This was the pulp and peelings.
Matthew is holding his small taste of his fresh apple cider.
Matthew is signing his very own library card!
His teacher, Mrs. Keonig, is reading to the class.

Let's be grateful for the apple seed!!!
