Yesterday was our corn day. Mom, the kids and I cooked and husked and cleaned and cooked off 500 ears of corn!!! It went great! Past years we have done 1000 ears plus so with only half as much, it wasn't bad at all!!! But that did mean only half the help too but Hadassah and Matthew pitched in and we had this job all done by lunch time!!! Thanks guys!!!
Mom's got the perfect place and set up to do corn! We go by the barn and fill Mom's huge outside cooker up with water. Dump in some corn and then use the pitch fork to scoop out the ears after they have cooked for awhile. The cooked ears get dumped into a clean garage can filled with cold water and then we clean each corn on the cob. They it goes into a tubbie of ice water to chill. All that's left to do then is cut or cream it off the cob and bag it up and stick the bags into the freezer!!!
Here's our starting pile.
Dad had the skid loader right beside the cooker so that when we cleaned the husk off, we threw the husk on the skid loader bucket! Austin had the best seat!!! :)))
We missed Daudy D. because he was usually the one that pitch forked the cobs into the boiling water and then scooped them out. Matthew did a terrific job at this this year!!!
Here's the corn crew!!! :)
Ashlyn and Austin played while we worked!
I didn't make any promises but I grabbed the pool bag and accessories before leaving the house yesterday morning. I thought that if we get done with the corn in good time, we could spend the afternoon at the pool. And that's what happened!!!
The pool days are winding down and school begins in two weeks. So, we enjoyed the afternoon of sunshine and water and snacks while we could!!!
